THREE MONTHS LATER, a letter was mailed from Nova Scotia by John Bradley, on the way back from his Arctic hunt on the schooner named for him. The missive was addressed to Herbert Bridgman, secretary of the Peary Arctic Club, and dated August 26, 1907, from Etah, in northern Greenland. An apparent gesture of professional courtesy, it read,

I have hit upon a new route to the North Pole and will stay to try it. By way of Buchanan Bay and Ellesmere Land and northward through Nansen Strait over the Polar Sea seems to me to be a very good route. There will be game to the 82nd degree, and here are natives and dogs for the task. So here is for the Pole. . . .
